My S3 has stock ICS with just root access. I was unable to update it to Jelly Bean using kies. In the method defined above I would loose all existing apps, games, game progress etc. which would not happen if I update via kies.

Is there a way to update via kies only?

    • arafat21

Actually! Official update don’t erase data but we warn users as precaution. As you own a rooted S3, why don’t you use Titanium Backup to backup your apps and its data?

        Thanks for the reply Arafat.

I’m not too keen on taking and restoring back up due to 2 reasons:
        1. Too many applications to take the back up.
        2. They would loose their Google play reference and I would stop receiving updates.
I can restore the reference using Titanium back, but then again it’s more work.

Feel free to correct any of the above statements. :)

Also just to confirm, what you are saying is that following the above method I might not loose my apps and games progresses. Taking backups is more precautionary than required.

I can’t comment on point 1 but for point 2, I think you can use this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.punsoftware.backup

Thanks again. I’ll checkout the app.

BTW.. I used the above method to update to JB and it worked like a charm.
            Thanks for sharing.
